World Environment Day- That has made all the difference

Hello Nature!
How pity you may get
Still, how pretty are you?
But I'm afraid how long the make up stays...

On a train to the country's south-east side,
Not to the barren lands but to the lands of tide.

Much far away, somewhere around a mile,
Noticed a huge mountain of plastic pile.
No reason why people dump it there,
Just because people run for a dare.
On the other side, growing trees,
To get some cool breeze.

Asked mom whether everything is right,
Reply was unless people get tight and fight!

Celebrating Eco Day for a cause,
Usage of plastic- give it a pause.

Today, global citizens are celebrating the Eco Day to encourage worldwide awareness for the protection of the environment. Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 to focus on daily environmental challenges which leads to a catastrophe.

These challenges are just like weeds; it is safe to proceed with weeding at the germinating period and it requires strenuous efforts to recognize them as discrete units among the good ones.

Each year, Eco Day focuses on a unique theme. This year, the theme is to beat plastic pollution. A thing in which light must be thrown, isn't it?

What's wrong with plastics?
  • People all around the world use 500 billion polythene bags every year.
  • 50% of the plastic we use is single-use.
  • We have produced more plastic in the last decade compared to the whole last century.
  • We buy 1 million plastic bottles every minute.
  • In 2016, 480 billion drinking bottles were sold worldwide.
  • Every year, 17 million barrels of oil to produce plastic bottles for water.
  • Plastic covers 10% of the waste that is produced in a year.
  • In developed economies, 1/3rd of the plastic is used in packaging. Application of plastic may differ- 42% of India's consumption is used for packaging.
After 10-15 days, I got used to be plastic free. I used paper bags instead of plastic bags. Well, you can't use paper bags all the time. Can be used to carry things that are light in weight. I even used neem sticks for brushing instead of toothbrush. My dad always told me that brushing with neem sticks give many benefits for us. It makes our teeth and enamel strong, a glistening teeth (like pearl, just kidding) and so on. Definitely this is going to be my next blog...

Plastic has occupied its place in everyday life and still described as a threat to the environment, lives of humans and animals. While plastic can be greeted with value, we became over- reliant on single-use plastic which results in severe environmental consequences.

Plastic is prevalent in our lives these days. It makes up our computer, containers in fridge and drinking bottles. But who cares about its dark side?
Plastic is made from the substitutes of fossil fuel, such as petroleum and natural gas. The petrochemicals that are used in manufacturing plastic bottles can make drinking water toxic.

Things to know about- Statistical Analysis:

Well, in few cases, you cannot avoid plastic. Cloth bags are replaced by polythene bags because they are strong, waterproof, have good flexibility and leave no place for food contamination.
Due to its low cost, ease of manufacture, versatility and durability, plastics are used in multitude of products, ranging from paper clips to aircraft.
They have prevailed over traditional materials such as wood, stone and metals.

Myself after 35 days of challenge:

It has really been tough days for me to be plastic free for these 35 days! On June 5, I just took a challenge myself to #Beattheplastic. Anyway, I didn't know it would end up as a chartbuster! Let me tell you everything in a nut shell. Definitely not ordeal as you think..

First day of the school- Books... After all this time?
The school management of the school instructed us to wrap (cover) the book with polythene wrappers. Within quite few days after the challenge, I got vexed, feeling so hopeless that I would end up as a ne'er- do-well person. Finally, the blood in my arteries woke up and I went to school with books without wrapping it. As I told the faculties there, they ended up with a decision to ban plastic in the school! This was the first initiative to be taken by the Eco Club in my school.

I always heard people saying pencil pouch bags are more convenient than plastic pencil box. I just gave a try. I felt no difference in it but it was easy to carry around and was versatile.

Days passed. Soon plastic became my archenemy. I didn't boast it was a great task but hope it can bring a change in the world we live.
If she can, why can't you?
" Four years' trash, one jar... zero waste
Lauren Singer started living a zero-waste lifestyle in 2012. A 16 oz mason jar holds everything that she couldn't reuse or recycle. She says compared to the average American, who produces on average around 4.5 pounds (two kilos) of trash per day, she's saved over 6,000 pounds (2,720 kilos) of it from going to landfill sites."

Let us make a change. We lived, are living, will live; let our roots grow deeper, anchor deep with no barriers...
