World Youth Skills Day- Support the Youth

Do you know which word has been chosen for the "Word of the Year 2017" according to the Oxford Dictionary?
Oxford Dictionary declared a word coined in 1965 as the word of the year in 2017. A 52-year-old word? Age doesn't matter with its success and fame, I agree...

'Youthquake'- defined as "a significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people," grabbed the title.

Origin:

1965: from youth + quake, on the pattern of earthquake. The first recorded use is from the January 1965 edition of the magazine Vogue, describing the upsurge of youth culture in London that occurred in the 1960s, especially as reflected in the changing fashion of the period. The word apparently coined by Diana Vreeland, then editor-in-chief of Vogue.

This word was repeatedly used during the general elections held in United Kingdom and New Zealand, which was bolstered by youth between the year 2016 and 2017.

Were you familiar with the word already? I admit that you are not alone.

In today's world, the youth is the powerful weapon a country could have. To celebrate the skills and abilities of youth, United Nations has declared a day to mark the milestones of youth's achievement- World Youth Skills Day, which is celebrated on 15 July every year.

Global number of youths is the highest ever. With 356 million 10-24 year-old people, India serves as the largest home to them, despite standing 2nd in population, after China. The second stands China with 269 million young people, followed by Indonesia (67 million), the USA (65 million), Pakistan (59 million), Nigeria (57 million), Brazil (51 million) and Bangladesh (48 million).

As the Earth has 1.8 billion young people between 10 and 24 years of age, 9 in 10 of the young population live in less developed countries.

Young people can serve the world with growing technology and so on only when they are provided with proper access to education, training, and health care. When the government invests on human capital, it can sure turn liability to asset. In return, the people improve the condition of the society, contribute to the economical development and increase Gross Domestic Product.

What about employment? The working population between the ages of 15 and 65 years are said to be productive population because their innovative work would provide a great contribution to the economy and their innovation makes life easier. What if this population fluctuates so bad?

Youth population is almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults and are exposed to lower quality of jobs, greater labour market inequalities etc. Moreover, women are likely to be unrecognized in labour market and are given meagre income.

What can be done to avoid unemployment?
Here are some possible ways to uplift the youth in labour market:
  • Provide awareness. It is a great way to start up. There must be a media to connect youth all over the world.
  • Investment on human capital through basic education (literacy and numeracy), training an medical care.
  • Youth must be given a chance to pursue vocational courses, which would be helpful in starting up business in the future.
  • Must attend several programs to develop small business, which would be a lending hand for novice entrepreneurs to start a bright business. Example: Google Developers Program.

That is why education and skills are key determinants of success in the labor market. But the latest surveys state that young people have low levels of achievement in basic literacy and numeracy. To raise awareness of the importance of youth's voice and skill development, the United Nation decided to designate 15 July as World Youth Skills Day.

Still, there are youth who are lacking opportunities to get up from stress and start a good future. Let us support them.
