Blood Group Genetics- Dracula's basic lesson to know

Image
"Blood as Power." This is the ideology of Mr.Dracula. Let us call him Drac. Finally, he found a prey and was about to hunt. But wait here. Do you think Drac is not aware of blood type genetics? He must just be pretending as if he is a dumb... Blood is a fluid that delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic waste products away from the cells. In vertebrates, it is composed of blood cells suspended in blood plasma . Every drop of blood contains erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells), which contain a red pigment called haemoglobin . When haemoglobin carry oxygen, it forms oxyhaemoglobin. The blood also contains leukocytes (White Blood Cells), which help in fighting infections. Platelets are tiny blood cells that help the body form clots to stop bleeding. If a blood vessel gets damaged, it sends out signals that are picked up by platelets. These platelets rush to the target site and clot to repair the damage. Our blood conta...

Maha Shivarathri- You Snooze, You Lose!

Image
Scientific reason behind Maha Shivaratri Around Maha Shivaratri, the Sun and the Moon are aligned in such a way that the Vata component of our body gets activated. The activity is maximum during this time of the year. Vata is one of the three constituents of the body, the other two being Pitta and Kapha.   Anything related to movement in the body has a direct connection with Vata. Accordingly, Vata directly impacts the following –  At the physical level (Sthula), Vata impacts the nervous system, and controls all bodily movement.   At a cellular level (Sookshma), Vata “moves” nutrients into the body, and at the same time “moves” the wastes out of the cell.  In the natural plan (Karana), Vata helps in retrieving information from the memory, and enables cause and effect analysis. Adiyogi Such is the importance of Vata. Even a minor imbalance of Vata drastically affects the points mentioned above. In case of a Vata imbalance, the person will...

Time to celebrate linguistic diversity

Image
வணக்கம்! Have you ever tried to talk to a toddler? If you are a guy who usually breaks the neighbour's window by a ball, you would definitely console the kid of that family. I think it is damn archaic and the best way to drop out a conflict... Okay, have you ever noticed a peculiar thing that your so-called innocent neighbor kid respond to you in their own language. Have you wondered how they learned to respond like that? Research shows that mother tongue is the first language babies learn while they are still inside the womb. It is the language they grow up knowing and communicating with the world. As we grow up, we may learn different languages but nothing can comfort your way of communicating like our mother tongue. Furthermore, native language actually builds your personality and influencing our cultural identity. With the advent of globalization, it has become imperative for us to explore foreign languages. But this reason should not push us to alienate our ...

Waiting for New Year's Resolution?

Are you one of those peeps who have no new plans for this year just yet? New Year's planning sure goes on till the last minute, and you almost end up with an empty notepad... The fate clearly can't be like that for all, so never lose hope. We use the word 'busy' way too much. The so-called busy me says so especially when my mom asks for help and she would say, "You amount to nothing because you procrastinate things!" And hopelessly, I just reply, "Just wait..." Mothers are better than astrologers, right? We tend to go with the word busy as an excuse to swither on unpleasant tasks. We use it to sound important at work that we prioritize because being busy somehow equates to being successful. But you are never too busy for 10 minutes or so, which is all it takes to improve yourself just a little each day. Stop prioritizing the busy fragments of your life and make time for things that you must throw light such as constant development of your me...

Origami Day- It's all about the art of paper folding

Image
What will you do if you have a scrap of paper? No writing tools, no scissors, no glue, and all you have is just a piece of paper! Few would give up: "I better throw it away..." But the curious workaholics won't stop fidgeting their fingers unless they end up with "I made it!" How do these weirdos find a paper cool? Sounds eccentric? Who doesn't love the magic of turning a piece of paper into something pretty? I find it the most exciting of all paper crafts for 2 reasons: I enjoy making these stuffs. Yeah, it needs patience, concentration and a good mood. If you stick to these conditions, you would definitely love them. Origami is an inexpensive hobby you can have. The most sarcastic part of all- I don't need to search for glue, scissors or any but a single piece of paper. I do not need to curse my breathe for not arranging my cupboard properly, mom's same-old-rebuke or sister's lame jokes at that scenario... As you know, origami i...

Has the mystery behind the Bermuda Triangle solved?

Image
Ahoy, matey! It's been a long time since I ended up here after a long journey to find a treasure box. Finally, I found nothing. Disappointed. I feel a lot like a pirate today as it has been a 8 years since I wore the pirate costume on the fancy dress competition. Yeah, everyone called me a freak! I just can't stop rolling my tears and 50 pairs of eyes were staring at me. Then, I just made a story and the judges got the heart to make a day for me. Thanks a lot! People loved hearing stories but I got a scientific yearn to tell about my journey and the struggle to come out of the Bermuda triangle... Pretty weird. Okay, that's enough for now and you would have got an idea about today's post. "Has the mystery of Bermuda triangle solved?" The Devil's triangle The Bermuda Triangle is roughly a triangular region of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico. It is the cursed place for the ships, planes and boats to trav...

As several parts of Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts were submerged, people were camped on terraces and higher floors waiting for rescuers. What did  I  do with regard to this issue? Being a good-hearted person, it is embarrassing for me that I didn't take part in rescuing people. Now, my brain is flooded with all subjects and I am preparing ...

World Youth Skills Day- Support the Youth

Image
Do you know which word has been chosen for the "Word of the Year 2017" according to the Oxford Dictionary? Oxford Dictionary declared a word coined in 1965 as the word of the year in 2017. A 52-year-old word? Age doesn't matter with its success and fame, I agree... ' Youthquake '- defined as "a significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people," grabbed the title. Origin : 1965: from youth + quake, on the pattern of earthquake. The first recorded use is from the January 1965 edition of the magazine Vogue, describing the upsurge of youth culture in London that occurred in the 1960s, especially as reflected in the changing fashion of the period. The word apparently coined by Diana Vreeland, then editor-in-chief of Vogue. This word was repeatedly used during the general elections held in United Kingdom and New Zealand, which was bolstered by youth between the year 2016 and 2017. ...

Nipah Virus: A matter of concern

Image
Nipah virus claims many mysterious deaths for the past few days in Kerala, a state on India's tropical Malabar Coast. This viral infection has taken its toll over many people recently. Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes diseases in animals and humans. The main host is said to be fruit bats belonging to the Pteropodidae family, Pteropus genus. This infection was first seen during the outbreak of disease in Kampung Sangai Nipah, Malaysia around mid-1998. Later, this incident coincides with a place in Singapore. On this occasion, pigs were seen as the intermediate hosts. Subsequest NiV outbreaks were similar to one another. The NiV infection found in affected pigs got transmitted to humans. Later, in the year of 2004, many people were affected with NiV and it is said that the consumption of date palm sap contaminated by the infected bats was the cause for the NiV transmission. Gradually, this infection spread like wildfire in and aro...

World Bee Day- It's a Bee Thing

Image
It's almost spring now, The crops are ready to bow.  The scent of flowers wafts in the zephyr with a bloom,  Here comes the sunshine, to fade the gloom.  On the way, bees come buzzing around, annoying your jovial mood, But have you ever known their importance or at least their part in producing food? I have been working like a busy bee all day to research the reason behind celebrating the World Bee Day, which lies on the 20th of May. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution declaring 20 May as the World Bee Day. Why did they choose this date? 20 May coincides with Anton Janša's birthday, who is well-known for his modernised bee-keeping tactics in his native, Slovenia in the 18th century. Beekeeping is an important farm activity with an ancestral tradition of Anton Janša. In 1766, he joined in the first beekeeping school in Europe and since 1769, he worked as a full-time beekeeper. What happens to...
